Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - December 13, 2020, Winnipeg, Manitoba C M Y K PAGE A18 A 18 SUNDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2020 ? WINNIPEGFREEPRESS.COMSPORTS I SKIING VAL D'ISERE, France - At age 32, Swiss skier Mauro Caviezel got the fi rst win of his late-blooming career in a World Cup super-G on Saturday. Caviezel topped a podium with two racers getting their first career top-3 finishes. He was 0.10 seconds faster than Adrian Smiseth Sejersted of Norway and 0.54 clear of Austrian Christian Walder. Toronto's Jack Crawford was the top Canadian, finishing 2.16 seconds back of Caviezel for 40th place. Close behind was Brodie Seger of North Vancouver, who came in 41st. Broder- ick Thompson of Whistler, B.C., placed 45th and Riley Seger finished 48th. Caviezel's victory came at a special place in the French Alps. At Val d'Isre 19 years ago, his childhood idol Silvano Beltrametti was left para- lyzed by a crash in downhill. Beltrametti has since been a men- tor for Caviezel, who comes from the same Graubnden region of Switzer- land. Caviezel won the opening super-G wearing the red bib noting he was the discipline standings champion last season. That title was earned with consistency - top-5 placings in all six races - without a signature win. Travis Ganong's fourth place Sat- urday, 0.76 back, was his best World Cup result in nearly four years. The American racer won a downhill in January 2017 at Garmisch-Parten- kirchen, Germany. Super-G races typically have tricky passages for speed racers who do not ski on the course-setting until a brief inspection in the early morning. World Cup defending overall champion Aleksander Aamodt Kilde was among several losing time trying to navigate tight, right-hand turns. He placed 12th, exactly one second behind Caviezel. - The Associated Press Caviezel finally a winner at 32 COURCHEVEL, France - Marta Bassino won her second straight World Cup giant slalom of the season on Saturday, and Mikaela Shiffrin placed fourth in her return to the event after an 11-month gap. Bassino produced the fastest second-run time after trailing world champion Petra Vlhova the first time down in the morning. The Italian racer finished 0.46 ahead of hard-char- ging Sara Hector, and 0.59 clear of Vlhova whose three-race winning streak was ended. Valerie Grenier of Mont-Tremblant, Que., was the top Canadian on Saturday, finishing 4.83 seconds be- hind Bassino for 13th spot. Toronto's Ali Nullmeyer and Candace Crawford, and Mikaela Tommy of Wake- field, Que., did not qualify. Shiffrin had been third-fastest in the morning and was again quick in the top sections before losing time in the lower part of a course slowed by steady falling snow. She finished 1.70 behind Bassino. The American star skied straight out of the finish area without looking back at the big screen broadcast- ing her run. There were no fans at the race in the up- scale French Alps resort. - The Associated Press Bassino claims World Cup GS ALESSANDRO TROVATI / THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Late-blooming champion Mauro Caviezel celebrates winning the men's World Cup Super G in Val d' Isere, France, Saturday.
