of a fire in a two-and-a-half storey house in
the 300 block of Victor Street.
Upon arrival, WFPS encountered smoke
coming from the home and launched an
offensive attack. Worsening conditions led
crews to transition to a defensive attack for a
short time before re-entering the structure.
The fire was declared under control at 12:30
p.m. All occupants of the residence safely self-
evacuated and no injuries were reported. The
cause of the fire remains under investigation.

ICEMAN ? FROM A1
"Our concern with just opening up the rink and just saying
'Hey, everything's available,' is that we felt that we might be
inundated with people."
The opening is "a long time coming," Walsh said, and there's
a lot to celebrate - all three rinks are fitted with completely
new boards after the centre received a $100,000 grant from
the city earlier this year.
"We've been very lucky to have it, this has all reminded us
of the hard work that we've done over the years to ensure the
lights always remain on in that place, and it's always a place
to go to," Walsh said. "With not a lot of activities going on this
year, this will be a destination for people for sure."
The mild weather has made it especially difficult for
Beaucage to work his usual magic, but he said some of his
usual features - including a large pleasure skating trail loop
around the field - are coming when there's more snow on the
ground.
"I create a winter wonderland here, is what I do," he said.
"Not just for people who want to play hockey, but for families
who want to bring their children here to slide, pleasure skat-
ing."
Even the ice slide, where people are asked to keep their
distance while waiting, found visitors excited to take advan-
tage of the chilly weekend. Olivia, 11, and Cam, 12, were two
of those visitors.
"There's pretty much nothing to do (due to) COVID and
quarantine, and since the ice rinks are open it's something fun
to do," Cam said.
Both are out of school on winter break and said they were
hoping to get some time on the rinks and on the slide during
their time off.
"I've been coming since I was a little kid, my brother used
to play for this (hockey) team last year. it's convenient, and I
like going skating," Olivia said.
"I just moved here last year, and where I used to live, there
weren't too many places like Roblin (Park)," Cam said. "I like
the environment and everyone is really nice here."
Beaucage grew up in Elie, a small community 45 kilometres
west of Winnipeg. He describes his family as "not very well
off," and said the communal support when he was young and
pursuing athletics inspires him to pay it forward every year.
"This is a great community, the Roblin Park community
is probably unique because of the mindset of the people," he
said. "We've always had a good group of volunteers here."
He'll be tending to the ice at Roblin Park as long as he's able
to and said he's happy the people who have asked him when
the ice was going to be ready this year now have a place to
skate.
"I knew that the community, the kids, were waiting for it,"
he said.
