Seinfeld-like finale to Curb
a clever act of defiance
LARRY David has never apologized
for the much-maligned Seinfeld
finale. And he’s not about to start
now.
The acclaimed writer and actor
used Sunday’s end of his long-run-
ning HBO series Curb Your Enthu-
siasm to double down on the last
episode of the NBC 1990s mega-hit,
daring viewers to hate it all over
again.
The results were less than
hilarious, but it was an appropriate,
clever act of defiance.
More than 75 million people
watched that 1998 episode of Sein-
feld, but you might not remember
the details. A quick recap: Jerry
and the only three people on Earth
that can stand him are arrested for
breaking an obscure Good Samari-
tan law in Massachusetts.
They are imprisoned after
characters from their past pop up
to give jurors past examples of
their extreme indifference to other
people. David, who co-created the
series, came back after a two-year
hiatus to help write the send-off.
The entire 12th season of Curb,
which had its debut season in 2000,
has dropped hints that its finale
would echo the end of David’s pre-
vious show. In the season premiere,
Larry gets arrested in Georgia for
giving water to someone in a voting
line, violating a state law.
The trial, which took up much of
Sunday’s 55-minute episode, con-
sisted of characters from the past
getting one last chance to gripe,
triggering clips of Larry’s most
cringe-worthy moments: Stealing
shoes from a Holocaust museum,
beating a black swan to death with
a golf club, hiring a prostitute so he
could use the carpool lane.
The trip down memory lane did
give us one last chance to salute
some beloved guest stars, from
political whistleblower Alexander
Vindman to Bruce Springsteen, but
it felt more like one of those high
school reunions. The series finale
seemed like a good idea on paper,
but once you’re there, you kind of
regret making the trip.
What did work was watching
David treat his ordeal as if he was
trying to rub a grass stain off his
pants.
He was too obsessed with killing a
fly to listen to his defence attorney
(Sanaa Lathan) present her opening
statement. Instead of studying his
case at night, he was browbeating
Richard Lewis’ girlfriend (a bril-
liant Allison Janney) over claims
that she tried to commit suicide.
He sealed his doom by making his
star character witness turn against
him after he and his manager (Jeff
Garlin) steal her recipe for salad
dressing.
This was Curb at its best, a
curmudgeon so irritated by petty
annoyances that he can’t — or won’t
— see the big picture.
Those hoping for a full-fledged
Seinfeld reunion had to be a little
disappointed; only Jerry Seinfeld
appeared, springing his longtime
buddy from jail on a technicality.
“This is how we should have
ended the finale,” Larry barks as he
departs the cell.
The legacy of Seinfeld was prom-
inent even without cameos from
Kramer, Elaine and George.
In the finale’s most telling scene,
a mom tries to get her son to apol-
ogize to Larry for accidentally hit-
ting him in the head with a toy ball.
David isn’t about to help her out.
“I’m 76 years old, and I’ve never
learned a lesson in my entire life,”
Larry tells the bemused kid.
That was theme of both classic
sitcoms. And that’s the reason Curb
will be missed.

NEAL JUSTIN
N
EW YORK — Actor Jonathan
Majors has been ordered to
complete a yearlong counselling
program but avoided jail time Mon-
day for assaulting his ex-girlfriend in
a high-profile case that derailed the
once-promising star’s career.
The 34-year-old star of Creed III
and other films had faced up to a year
behind bars after he was convicted of
misdemeanour assault by a Manhattan
jury in December.
In court Monday, Judge Michael
Gaffey sentenced Majors to conditional
discharge after noting that both sides
in the case agreed the charges did
not warrant jail time, given the actor
was a first-time offender with no prior
criminal record.
He said Majors must complete a 52-
week, in-person batterer’s intervention
program in Los Angeles, where the ac-
tor lives. He also has to continue with
the mental health therapy his lawyers
say he’s been participating in. Majors
faces a year in jail if found in violation
of the terms, which also included a
no-contact order with his former girl-
friend, Grace Jabbari.
Majors, dressed in all black and
accompanied by his girlfriend, actor
Meagan Good, declined to address the
court and left the courthouse without
speaking to reporters.
His lawyer, Priya Chaudhry, said
the actor did not want to make any
public statement that Jabbari could use
against him in the civil suit she’s filed
against the actor.
Majors, she added, is “committed to
growing as a person” and will complete
any court-mandated programs “with
an open heart” even as he maintains
his innocence and plans to appeal.
“He’s lost his whole career,”
Chaudhry said in court. “This has been
the most challenging year of his life.”
But Jabbari, fighting back tears as
she addressed the court, said Majors
refuses to acknowledge his guilt and
remains a danger to those around him.
“He’s not sorry. He has not accepted
responsibility, ” she said. “He will do
this again and he will hurt other wom-
en. He believes he is above the law.”
Following the December guilty
verdict, Majors was immediately
dropped by Marvel Studios, which had
cast him as Kang the Conqueror, a role
envisioned as the main villain in the
entertainment empire’s movies and
television shows for years to come.
The conviction stemmed from
an altercation last March in which
Jabbari accused him of attacking her
in the backseat of a chauffeured car,
saying he hit her head with his open
hand, twisted her arm behind her back
and squeezed her middle finger until it
fractured.
Majors claimed the 31-year-old Brit-
ish dancer was the aggressor, flying
into a jealous rage after reading a text
message from another woman on his
phone. He maintained he was only try-
ing to regain his phone and get away
from Jabbari safely.
Majors had hoped his two-week
criminal trial would vindicate him.
In a television interview shortly after
his conviction, he said he deserves a
second chance.
The actor had his breakthrough role
in 2019’s The Last Black Man in San
Francisco. He also starred in the HBO
horror series Lovecraft Country, which
earned him an Emmy nomination,
and as the nemesis to fictional boxing
champ Adonis Creed in the blockbust-
er Creed III.
As for Marvel, a looming question
remains whether the studio will recast
the role of Kang or pivot in a new
direction.
Majors’ departure was among a re-
cent series of high-profile setbacks for
the vaunted superhero factory, which
has earned an unprecedented US$30
billion worldwide from 33 films.
