Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - June 19, 2024, Winnipeg, Manitoba C4 ● WINNIPEGFREEPRESS.COM DINNER: La Roca, 155 Smith St. It’s hard to beat the appeal of a roof- top patio — something about even a minor amount of added elevation feels very novel in this exceptionally flat Prairie city. La Roca has a large, two-tiered patio with 165 ground-level and second-storey seats. The downtown Mexican restaurant also has some attractive happy hour specials: trios of tacos (of which there are 11 varieties) are $14 from 4 to 6 p.m. on weeknights, margaritas are half-off on Wednesdays, as are bottles of wine and “macho nachos” on Thursdays. The restaurant and lounge doubles as a music venue with live acts every Friday and Saturday. La Roca is open Tuesday through Saturday from 4 p.m. to late. Reserva- tions available. OTHER STOPS: Rae and Jerry’s Steak House (1405 Portage Ave.); the Oxbow Natural Wine Bar & Restau- rant (557 Osborne St.); Pizzeria Gusto (404 Academy Rd.) DESSERT: La Crêperie du Pont Provencher, 50 Esplanade Riel Sweets in the middle of one of Winni- peg’s most iconic bridges? Yes, please. La Crêperie Ker Breizh’s kiosk on the east end of the Provencher Bridge features a small seating area with views of the Red River, Canadian Museum for Human Rights and Old St. Boniface. The seasonal crêperie is situated in a replica 19th-century tram car with a menu of savoury galettes and sweet crêpes filled with everything from homemade jam and bananas to chocolate sauce and ice cream. Ker Breizh’s West Broadway hub, located at 267 Sherbrook St., also has an outdoor seating area. The kiosk is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends. OTHER STOPS: Sargent Sundae (2053 Portage Ave.); Nucci’s Gelati (643 Corydon Ave.); Sub Zero Ice Cream (298 Jamison Ave.) DRINKS: Langside Grocery, 164 Langside St. The backyard patio at Langside Grocery is a small verdant gem surrounded by high brick walls and a lighted tree canopy. The courtyard is cute, cosy and often visited by neigh- bourhood cats — an added bonus, in my opinion. The drinks menu is large and ever-changing with crafted seasonal cocktails (including low- and no-al- cohol options), wines and beers. The lounge also has a tight food menu with small shareable bites, such as olives, a shrimp cocktail, beef tartare and a rotating cheese board. Open from 5 to late, seven days a week. Reservations available. OTHER STOPS: Darling Bar (171 McDermot Ave.); The Roost (651 Co- rydon Ave.); Pony Corral Pier 7 (1700 Pembina Hwy.) eva.wasney@winnipegfreepress.com X: @evawasney WEDNESDAY, JUNE 19, 2024 PRIME TIME TV WEDNESDAY MOVIES R o g e r s M T S B e l l S h a w D i r e c t 6 PM 6:30 7 PM 7:30 8 PM 8:30 9 PM 9:30 10 PM 10:30 11 PM 11:30 2 CBC (6) 2 226 332 CBC Winnipeg News (N) Son of a Critch Laughs: Gags < "No Ordinary Man" ('20, Doc) Premiere The National (N) CBC Winnipeg News (N) 3 PBS 3 - 388 PBS News Hour (N) Dynamic Planet "Ice" Premiere (N) Hope in the Water Premiere (N) NOVA "Alaskan Dinosaurs" Amanpour and Company (N) ICT Newscast Focus on Europe 4 CBS 4 387 News (N) Wheel of Fortune Price Is Right "Jackpot Special 3" (N) Let's Make a Deal Primetime (N) Tracker "Camden" News (N) Late Show-Colbert (N) After Mid. The boy band singer-turned-solo star and actor was driving a 2025 BMW in Sag Harbor around 12:30 a.m. local time when an officer stopped him and determined he was intoxicated, accord- ing to a court document. “His eyes were bloodshot and glassy, a strong odour of an alcoholic bever- age was emanating from his breath, he was unable to divide attention, he had slowed speech, he was unsteady afoot and he performed poorly on all standardized field sobriety tests,” the court papers said. Timberlake, 43, told the officer he had one martini and was following some friends home, according to the documents. After being arrested and taken to a police station in nearby East Hampton, he refused a breath test, said the court papers, which listed his occupation as “professional” and said he’s “self-em- ployed.” The 10-time Grammy winner was released without bond later Tuesday morning after being arraigned in Sag Harbor. He was charged with a driv- ing-while-intoxicated misdemeanour, and his next court date was scheduled for July 26, the Suffolk County district attorney’s office said. Timberlake’s lawyer and represen- tatives did not immediately return requests for comment from The Associated Press. Fluent in the inflections of pop and R&B, he’s known for such Gram- my-winning hits as Cry Me A River, SexyBack and Can’t Stop The Feeling! Timberlake also built an acting career, garnering acclaim in movies including The Social Network and Friends With Benefits and winning four Primetime Emmy Awards. Last year, Timberlake was in the headlines when his ex-girlfriend Brit- ney Spears released her memoir, The Woman in Me. Several chapters were devoted to their relationship, including details about a pregnancy, abortion and painful breakup. In March, Timberlake released his first new album in six years, the nostalgic Everything I Thought It Was, a return to his familiar future funk sound. Sag Harbor, a onetime whaling vil- lage mentioned in Herman Melville’s classic novel Moby-Dick, is nestled amid the Hamptons, around 160 kilometres east of New York City. The Hamptons have long been a hot spot for the rich and famous, and various stars and otherwise prominent people have had brushes with the law there. The village has long had its share of prominent homeowners and residents, including singer-songwriter Billy Joel, former CNN host Don Lemon, Nobel Prize-winning novelist John Steinbeck, feminist writer Betty Friedan, and Pu- litzer Prize winners Colson Whitehead and Lanford Wilson. Whitehead’s novel Sag Harbor is set there, particularly in a beachfront enclave where gen- erations of Black families have spent summers. — The Associated Press PHILIP MARCELO AND JENNIFER PELTZ CHRIS PIZZELLO / THE ASSOCIATED PRESS FILES Justin Timberlake said he’d only had one martini but refused a breathalyzer. SUPPLIED Get on up: La Roca on Smith Street has a large two-tiered outdoor space. “It’s been just like a fairy tale. I’ve seen so many kiddos rush up to me, saying hello,” she says. “I love the performances at Kitty Corner with T&J, and seeing all the princesses; it’s been absolutely magical.” Guests are invited to chat and take pictures with Elsa and other charac- ters, which has been a highlight for many children, she says. “Throughout the week, there will be more characters to come. So far, we’ve had Buzz Lightyear, Sonic, Belle and even Spider-Man in the parade today,” the princess says. “Elsa” says she’s loved every min- ute of interacting with people. “I love spreading joy and happiness. It’s an absolute dream being here.” A market within the fairgrounds boasts diverse booths, offering ev- erything from one-minute caricature drawings to henna applications, and a mini art gallery. Cake-ology’s pastry chef and co-owner, Austin Granados, showcas- es an array of delectable pastries at his booth. “It’s been really fun interacting with everyone and seeing people enjoy themselves, especially on the rides,” he says. This is the second time at the exhibition for Cake-ology, which has a permanent location at 85 Albert St. “The reception has been good so far. We’ve been doing long hours, waking up early, baking with my team, and then bringing everything over, setting up and staying until the end,” says the Kostuch Media Ltd. Top 30 Under 30 award winner for 2022. Granados, who is featured in this year’s second season of the Food Network’s Summer Baking Champi- onship, offers the flaky Breton pastry kouign-amann at his booth. “It’s a staple in our bakery and a fan favourite,” he says. Gate admission is $15, or visitors can purchase an event package, which includes all-day ride access, for $59.
