The Tortured Poets Department singer once again tops the VMA noms with 10 — eight for her Fortnight music video and nods in the artist of the year and best pop categories. She’s followed by her Fortnight collaborator Post Malone, who is nominated along with Swift eight times and earned his ninth nom for his country hit I Had Some Help, featuring Morgan Wallen. Rounding out the artist of the year category nominees announced Tues- day are Ariana Grande, Bad Bunny, Eminem, Sabrina Carpenter and SZA. The 2024 MTV VMAs will air live on Sept. 10 at UBS Arena on New York’s Long Island. Grande, Carpenter and Eminem are tied with six nods; Megan Thee Stallion and SZA have five each. Black- pink’s LISA, Olivia Rodrigo and Teddy Swims follow with four nominations. Fan voting is currently online Tues- day across 15 gender-neutral catego- ries and ends Aug. 30. Latino musicians’ tours making bank A QUARTER of the world’s top 20 touring artists are Latino musicians, according to new data from Pollstar. For the week of Aug. 5, the trade publication reports that Bad Bunny sits in third place with an average box office gross per city of US$3,816,973, below Luke Combs in first and Dead & Company in second. The data includes averages for worldwide ticket prices and average box office grosses per city for each artist. In addition to Bad Bunny, Colombi- an singer-songwriter Karol G holds the No. 9 spot with an average of US$2,320,979 box office gross per city. Aventura, the Puerto Rican bachata band, is at No. 11 with its 2024 reunion tour Cerrando Ciclos. Mexican pop singer Luis Miguel, who has drawn global audiences since 1982, is No. 13 on the list. The find- ings revealed that Latin music is the fastest-growing genre on streaming services in the United States. Actor Akili McDowell charged with murder ACTOR Akili McDowell, who starred in the television series David Makes Man and had roles in Billions and The Astronaut Wives Club, has been charged with fatally shooting a man in the parking lot of a Houston apartment complex, authorities said. McDowell, 21, was charged last week with murder in the July 20 shooting death of Cesar Peralta, 20, the Harris County sheriff’s office said. McDowell remained in jail this week on US$400,000 bond on the murder charge. The attorney listed for him in court records did not immediately reply to a request for comment. The sheriff’s office said deputies found an unresponsive man with gunshot wounds after responding to a call about a shooting at an apartment complex on July 20. The sheriff’s office said several witnesses told dep- uties the man had been in a physical altercation with another man, who fled on foot after the shooting. David Makes Man, which aired on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN, followed a teen named David, played by McDow- ell, who tried to juggle relationships between his school friends and drug dealers in his impoverished South Florida neighbourhood. Marilyn Monroe statue to be moved after uproar AFTER years of controversy and a protracted legal battle, a fixture of the Palm Springs, Calif. tourist scene is set to move. The Forever Marilyn statue, an eight-metre commemoration of Mon- roe’s famous skirt scene from 1955’s The Seven Year Itch, has drawn the ire of locals and visiting critics alike since it returned to Palm Springs in 2021. It stands in the middle of Downtown Park, with Monroe’s sculpted back facing the Palm Springs Art Museum. It will be moved to another location in the park. The statue left Palm Springs in 2014 before returning in 2021. Lynch, co-creator of the cult classic Twin Peaks television series, told Sight and Sound magazine that his condition leaves him only able to walk short distances before he runs out of breath, making directing nearly impossible. Emphysema is an incurable disease caused by exposure to cigarette smoke and air pollution. It’s a type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (oth- erwise known as COPD) that makes it hard to walk and breathe and worsens over time. Common treatments include quitting smoking, bronchodilators and corti- costeroids to open airways, oxygen therapy and antibiotics to treat infec- tions. In some cases, surgery or a lung transplant may be advised, but not all patients are candidates for these procedures. “Smoking was something that I absolutely loved, but in the end, it bit me,” Lynch, 78, said in the interview. “It was part of the art life for me: the tobacco and the smell of it and lighting things and smoking and going back and sitting back and having a smoke and looking at your work, or thinking about things; nothing like it in this world is so beautiful. Meanwhile, it’s killing me, so I had to quit.” The diagnosis stalls what’s been a highly successful career for Lynch. Twin Peaks was a massively influen- tial television series that helped mould the modern-day science-fiction mys- tery show genre. Three of his films, 1980’s The Elephant Man, 1986’s Blue Velvet and 2001’s Mulholland Drive earned him best director nominations at the Academy Awards. He’s also responsible for the 1984 version of Dune (which he later deemed a failure). Lynch, like other notable filmmakers, had a cast of regulars he’d enlist for his projects, including Laura Dern, Kyle MacLach- lan and the late Jack Nance. Lynch’s last feature film was 2006’s Inland Empire, which starred Dern. He more recently worked on Twin Peaks: The Return, a reboot of the original show that aired on Showtime in 2017 and starred MacLachlan. After the pandemic hit in 2020, Lynch experimented with painting and making new music, leading to his recent collaborative album with the artist Chrystabell, who played agent Tamara Preston in the 2017 Twin Peaks reboot. Lynch told Sight and Sound there’s a road map for him to direct again in the future, assuming he can do so remotely. “I would do it remotely if it comes to it. I wouldn’t like that so much,” Lynch said.
