Third person dies in Ontario in Listeria outbreak linked to plant-based milks TORONTO — A third person from On- tario has died in a Listeria outbreak connected to Great Value and Silk plant-based milks, the province’s Min- istry of Health said Monday afternoon. The statement followed an update about the outbreak published Monday by the Public Health Agency of Canada, which said there were 20 confirmed cases of people sickened by listeriosis — the illness caused by the Listeria bacteria — in four provinces. The affected products include Silk brand oat milk, almond milk, coconut milk, almond-coconut milk and al- mond-cashew milk, as well as Great Value brand almond milk with best before dates up to and including Oct. 4 and containing the number 7825 in the product code. The Listeria contamination origin- ated on a dedicated production line at Joriki, a third-party beverage pack- aging facility in Pickering, Ont., used by plant-milk manufacturer Danone Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said last week. People became sick between August 2023 and mid-July 2024, the Public Health Agency of Canada said. Thir- teen of the cases were in Ontario, five were in Quebec, one was in Nova Scotia and one was in Alberta. The people sickened range in age from seven to 89 and 70 per cent of the cases were 50 years of age and older. Fifteen people have been reported hos- pitalized in the outbreak, the agency said. The agency said people should check to see if they have any of the affected products and either throw them out or return them to where they were pur- chased. — The Canadian Press NICOLE IRELAND TORONTO — Scotiabank has signed a deal to buy a minority stake in U.S. bank KeyCorp as it works to focus on the North American market. The Canadian bank said Monday it will pay a total of about US$2.8 billion for a 14.9 per cent stake in the company in two stages. The deal significantly increases Sco- tia’s spending on its priority markets, said chief executive Scott Thomson in a statement. “We believe that this transaction provides attractive near-term returns to our shareholders and creates future optionality for Scotiabank in the North American corridor.” The bank announced a ‘refreshed’ company strategy last December that included pulling back new spending on some Latin American countries as it fo- cused resources closer to home. The deal with KeyCorp gives it a greater foothold in the U.S., where other Canadian banks have also been expanding their presence. Under the agreement, Scotiabank will acquire its stake through the issu- ance of a total of 163 million KeyCorp common shares in two tranches at a price of US$17.17 per share. National Bank analyst Gabriel De- chaine said the surprise deal is ex- pected to add value and increase its North American exposure. But he thinks investors were expecting Sco- tiabank to pull back from acquisitions, and that any plans for the bank to in- crease its stake in KeyCorp could sap capacity to spend capital elsewhere, like buybacks. The banks say Scotiabank will make an initial investment of US$800 million for a 4.9 per cent stake that is expected to close in its fourth quarter, subject to clearances and regulatory approvals. The deal will be followed by an addi- tional investment of US$2 billion for a 10 per cent stake that is expected to close in fiscal 2025. — The Canadian Press Scotiabank adds to U.S. exposure with US$2.8B deal for KeyCorp stake IAN BICKIS Goodyear spending $575M to expand Ontario plant, produce EV tires N APANEE, Ont. — Goodyear Canada is planning to spend more than $575 million to ex- pand and modernize an eastern On- tario plant to produce electric vehicle and all-terrain tires and make its pro- cesses more energy efficient. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Premier Doug Ford were on hand for an announcement Monday at the factory in Napanee and the project is getting financial support from both levels of government. Goodyear is set to receive up to $44.3 million from the federal Stra- tegic Innovation Fund and $20 mil- lion through the provincial Invest Ontario. Trudeau said Goodyear’s invest- ment is a vote of confidence for Can- ada’s auto sector and its workers. He touted, in particular, electric vehicle battery plants that Canada has at- tracted in the past several years, in- cluding three in the works in Ontario. “We chose to back our auto workers and invest in the future of the indus- try and the results, the results speak for themselves,” he said. “These global leaders have recog- nized all that Canada and Canadians have to offer: abundant clean energy and a commitment to serious climate action, access to critical minerals and other natural resources, stable and reliable democratic institutions, strong trade relationships spanning every corner of the globe, and, most importantly, the best workers in the world.” But not all electric vehicle manu- facturing news has been positive lately, with Umicore announcing last month that it had halted spend- ing on a battery materials plant not far from Goodyear’s eastern Ontario facility, citing substantially scaled- back growth projections for the EV market. And in April, Ford pushed back planned EV production at its plant in Oakville, Ont., by two years, only to announce in June it was switching production plans away from EVs to its Super Duty pickup trucks. Trudeau on Monday defended the push to make Canada, and in particu- lar Ontario, a leader in electric vehi- cles and the associated supply chain, including the billions of dollars in government subsidies that helped to attract the plants. “This is a nascent technology, a nascent industry,” he said. “There are going to be challenges along the way, but knowing that Canada has positioned itself as number one in the world in EV supply chains, according to Bloomberg, as the place to invest, has shown that we are making the right bet on the future.” Goodyear president and CEO Mark Stewart said the company’s plans in Napanee include facility expansion, modernization, new state-of-the-art equipment and new technology, as well as 200 new highly skilled jobs by 2027. “We really appreciate our very deep partnership with the federal, provincial and local municipalities, of course our amazing associates that make it happen every day here in Napanee, and their families here in the community,” he said. The project is also expected to get the plant to net-zero emissions by 2040. — The Canadian Press JUSTIN TANG / THE CANADIAN PRESS Goodyear tires on a conveyor belt in the warehouse at the plant in Napanee, Ont. ;
