DAY Johnston & Murphy shutters CDN stores TORONTO — Shoe and clothing retail- er Johnston & Murphy has closed its Canadian stores. The U.S. company announced the closure in an online note to customers, who were also told the brand is no long- er accepting e-commerce orders for shipment to Canada. Spokesperson Marisa Drew says in an email the company had five stores in the country including locations at Toronto Pearson Airport and Vaughan Mills and Mapleview Centre malls out- side the city. She described the closures as a result of rising operating costs which she said limited Johnston & Mur- phy’s retail opportunities. Drew said the company is revamping its international e-commerce oper- ations to support a digital presence in Canada and will continue to service customers in the country through wholesale partnerships with brands including Factory Shoe, Leclerc Chaus- sures and Duggers. — The Canadian Press Meta will continue to use fact checkers outside U.S. ‘for now’ META Platforms Inc. will continue to use its fact checkers outside of the United States “for now” even as the Instagram and Facebook owner does away with the practice at home, the company’s head of global business Nic- ola Mendelsohn said. Meta, which said it will replace third- party fact checkers in the U.S. with a community notes system, will see how the change plays out before deciding about a transition in other regions, Mendelsohn said in an interview with Bloomberg Television at the World Eco- nomic Forum in Davos on Monday. Chief executive officer Mark Zucker- berg said this month he decided to pull back on the practice, which was set up almost a decade ago to combat viral hoaxes spreading on the platform, be- cause the complex systems were mak- ing “too many mistakes” and unfairly censoring users. That will be more difficult outside of the U.S. where there are more stringent laws regulating how digital services police misinformation. The European Union requires large platforms to act- ively cull deceptive political content and disinformation or risk heavy fines under the Digital Services Act. “We’ll see how that goes as we move it out over the years,” Mendelsohn said. “So nothing changing in the rest of the world at the moment, we are still work- ing with those fact checkers around the world.” Zuckerberg also said the company would work with U.S. President Donald Trump to push back on countries that restrict free expression, blaming the U.S. government under the outgoing Biden administration for pushing for “censorship.” Trump, who was temporarily banned from Facebook after the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot and has called the platform “the enemy of the people,” welcomed the move and said Meta had “come a long way.” — Bloomberg News JILLIAN DEUTSCH 63% express recession concerns in 2025, 48% believe economy will weaken: BMO T ORONTO — As tariff threats continue to loom, a new Bank of Montreal survey finds 63 per cent of Canadians expressed concerns about the potential for a recession in the next 12 months. The online poll also found 48 per cent of those surveyed believed the econ- omy will weaken over the next year, while 19 per cent expect it to improve. Despite the pessimism among re- spondents, BMO Capital Markets sen- ior economist Robert Kavcic said the global economy is expected to grow this year. “While the trade concerns are front and centre for many Canadians and should be taken seriously, global eco- nomic growth is expected to continue and we expect underlying Canadian economic growth to improve in 2025, barring serious and sustained tariff action,” he said in a statement. Rising prices and the cost of living continue to be top concerns for Can- adians, the survey said. More than two-thirds of Canadians said inflation is having a negative im- pact on their current financial situa- tion. Forty-four per cent of respondents said they were spending an extra $100 to $300 per month on basic living ex- penses, while 38 per cent reported spending more than $300 extra every month. Sixty-one per cent of Canadian re- spondents said inflation is currently high and they fear prices will continue to rise. “On the inflation front, recent data also indicates price growth has stabil- ized around the Bank of Canada’s target. Canadians can expect the Bank of Can- ada to continue to reduce interest rates modestly further in 2025,” Kavcic said. Meanwhile, the survey points out last year was “generally positive” for in- vestors. “While economic headwinds, includ- ing the prospect of tariffs may be a con- cern for Canadian households, we still see room for the major markets to con- tinue making gains in 2025,” said Brent Joyce, chief investment strategist and managing director at BMO Private In- vestment Counsel, in a statement. Joyce said investors should remem- ber the Canadian stock market is not the Canadian economy “and it is often the case that markets climb a wall of worry.” The online survey of 1,500 adult Can- adians was conducted by Pollara from Nov. 8 to Nov. 18, 2024. The poll does not include a margin of error because online surveys are not considered truly random samples. — The Canadian Press RITIKA DUBEY GRAHAM HUGHES / THE CANADIAN PRESS FILES A cart of groceries in Montreal — 44 per cent of respondents said they were spending an extra $100-$300 a month on basic living expenses. Developer pitches 250-room floating hotel for Vancouver VANCOUVER — A Finnish developer wants to bring a 250-room floating ho- tel into Vancouver’s harbour. A statement from Sunborn Inter- national Holding says the proposed ho- tel would be 136 metres long and 19.5 metres high, spread out over six floors and connected to the Convention Centre by a ramp from the seawall walkway. The company says the hotel could be open by 2027, subject to government ap- provals, and it has begun the process of applying for rezoning from the city. Graham Clarke, chair of the Vancou- ver Harbour Flight Centre, which is partnering on the project, says in the statement the floating hotel would con- tribute to the urgent need for rooms in Vancouver with no permanent footprint or environmental ramifications. — The Canadian Press ;
