Barrick Gold
reports US$2.14B
profit for 2024
TORONTO — Barrick Gold Corp. says
it earned US$2.14 billion in 2024, up
from $1.27 billion a year earlier, helped
by higher gold and copper prices.
The gold miner, which keeps its books
in U.S. dollars, says the profit amount-
ed to US$1.22 per diluted share for the
year, up from 72 cents US per diluted
share in 2023.
Revenue for the year totalled US$12.92
billion, up from US$11.40 billion.
Gold sales for the year totalled nearly
3.8 million ounces, down from four mil-
lion ounces in 2023, while the realized
price rose to US$2,397 per ounce, up
from US$1,948 a year earlier. Copper
sales totalled 177,000 tonnes last year,
down from 185,000 tonnes in 2023,
while the company’s realized copper
price amounted to US$4.15 per pound
in 2024, up from US$3.85 a year earlier.
On an adjusted basis, Barrick says it
earned US$1.26 per share in 2024, up
from an adjusted profit of 84 cents US
per share in 2023.

Brookfield Asset
Management hikes
dividend
TORONTO — Brookfield Asset Manage-
ment Ltd. says it earned fourth-quarter
net income of US$186 million from its
stake in the asset management busi-
ness it owns with Brookfield Corp.
The company says it will pay a quar-
terly dividend of 43.75 cents US per
share, up from 38 cents US per share.
Brookfield Asset Management Ltd.,
which keeps its books in U.S. dollars,
says its fourth-quarter profit amounted
42 cents US per diluted share for the
quarter ended Dec. 31, up from US$95
million or 24 cents US per diluted share
a year earlier.
Brookfield Corp. spun off the asset
management business in 2022, but
maintained a majority stake in the oper-
ations, while Brookfield Asset Manage-
ment Ltd. held the rest of the company.
The full asset management business,
which reports its results in U.S. dollars,
reported a fourth-quarter profit attrib-
utable to the business of US$688 million,
up from US$374 million a year earlier.

Super Bowl broadcast drew record
US$800M in advertising sales for Fox
T
HIS year’s Super Bowl garnered
over US$800 million in advertis-
ing sales for Fox Corp. across its
broadcast and online outlets, the com-
pany said in a statement Wednesday.
The number tops previous NFL
championships, including the US$600
million Fox brought in for broadcasting
the game in 2023. This year’s matchup
between the Philadelphia Eagles and
Kansas City Chiefs set a record for sin-
gle ad sales, with prices topping US$8
million for a 30-second spot.
While the Eagles won a relatively
easy 40-22 victory over the Chiefs, the
game scored record viewership in part
because more fans streamed the game
than ever before. About 14.5 million
of the 127.7 million viewers on Feb. 9
watched it online, mostly on Fox’s Tubi
service.
That’s more than four times the 3.4
million who watched the Super Bowl
last year on outlets other than Para-
mount Global’s CBS network. Para-
mount broadcast the 2024 game on CBS
and streamed it on the company’s sub-
scription-based Paramount+ service.
Tubi is free to watch, something that
likely factored into the surge in online
viewing, and generates revenue from
advertising sales. The game was also
available on the NFL’s online outlets.
In an interview before the game
last week, Tubi’s CEO Anjali Sud told
Bloomberg Television the Super Bowl is
“a great opportunity to introduce Tubi’s
value proposition to more of America.”
Tubi isn’t a big player in live sports,
which are among the most expensive
properties for TV networks to acquire.
The service, which had nearly 100 mil-
lion monthly users before the Super
Bowl, typically features old movies and
TV shows, as well as some low-budget
originals. More than half of Tubi’s
viewers are Gen Z or Millennials, ac-
cording to the company. Some 77 per
cent don’t have cable-TV.
An ad for the streaming service,
which ran during the game, featured
a character with a head shaped like a
cowboy hat interacting with others
who dressed as wizards or pirates. It
was meant to underscore the variety of
programming available. The ad drew
mixed reactions, including a mention
on USA Today’s list of the game’s “most
unhinged” commercials.
Tubi had a 26-second delay, the short-
est lag time of any streaming service
during the Super Bowl, according to
video technology platform Phenix Real
Time Solutions Inc. However, some
viewers complained on social media
about buffering issues.
Fox acquired Tubi for US$440 mil-
lion in 2020 and later turned down un-
solicited offers of more than US$2 bil-
lion for the streamer.
The company has been investing
heavily in the business. Steve Tomsic,
Fox’s chief financial officer, said at a
conference in December that Tubi had
a deficit of about US$240 million during
the company’s 2024 fiscal year but that
he still sees “an enormous amount of
upside” in the service.
“It’s completely on us to drive better
profitability out of Tubi.”

CPP Investments
earned 3.8% in Q3
TORONTO — The Canada Pension Plan
Investment Board earned a net return
of 3.8 per cent in its latest quarter.
The result came as CPP Investments’
net assets grew to $699.6 billion at Dec.
31, up from $675.1 billion at the end of
the previous quarter.
It says the increase included $26 bil-
lion in net income less $1.5 billion in net
Canada Pension Plan outflows.
CPP Investments says it routinely re-
ceives more CPP contributions than re-
quired to pay benefits during the first
part of the calendar year, partially offset
by benefit payments exceeding contribu-
tions in the final months of the year.
It says its investments in private
equity and credit helped drive its re-
turns in its latest quarter, offset by loss-
es in fixed-income assets.

Japan’s SoftBank
posts US$2.4B loss
TOKYO — Japanese technology com-
pany SoftBank Group Corp. reported
a 369.2 billion yen (US$2.4 billion) loss
for the fiscal third quarter as it racked
up red ink from its Vision Fund invest-
ments. That’s compared to a 950 billion
yen profit in October-December 2023.
Quarterly sales rose three per cent
from the previous year to 1.83 trillion
yen (US$11.9 billion), the Tokyo-based
company said Wednesday.
SoftBank Group invests in an array
of companies it sees as holding long-
term potential, including unlisted up-
starts, so its financial performance
tends to swing wildly.
For the nine months of this fiscal year
through December, it recorded a profit
of 636 billion yen, a reversal from a loss
of 459 billion yen for the previous year.
