Big, Bold, Beautiful swing and a miss
N
EVER rent a car from Phoebe
Waller-Bridge. Or maybe do,
because the car rental agency
she mans in A Big Bold Beautiful
Journey has magical machinations
designed to send terminally single
people on a voyage through time
and space in order to work out their
issues and let their guard down
enough to connect with a soulmate.
From afar, A Big Bold Beautiful
Journey, with movie stars in full
swoon, might give skeptics pause
— it looks far too sappy and sac-
charine. But there are indeed some
trustworthy elements that make
this high-concept romance worth a
second view.
Director Kogonada has delivered
subtle and affecting films in Colum-
bus and After Yang, and stars Colin
Farrell and Margot Robbie could sell
just about any love story.
The script is by Seth Reiss, of
The Menu, and the film is of the
romantic magical realism genre,
like About Time, Palm Springs, The
Lake House, or any number of time
travel romances, in which someone
unsatisfied with life is forced to con-
front their issues to fix their future,
through an inexplicable reality-warp-
ing narrative device.
Which brings us back to Waller-
Bridge and the car rental agency she
runs in a giant empty warehouse with
the help of Kevin Kline. Her char-
acter has a German accent, a potty
mouth and only two cars available
— old Saturns — and she insists that
David (Farrell) get the GPS when
he rents one to drive to a wedding.
At said wedding, he encounters the
beguiling, elusive Sarah (Margot
Robbie), a manic pixie dream girl if
there ever was one, and on the way
home, the animated voice of his GPS
asks him if he’d like to take “a big,
bold, beautiful journey.”
He accepts and it leads him right
to a Burger King where he and Sarah
re-meet over a couple of “fast food
cheeseburgers” (in a bit of obvious
product placement).
The pair decide to embark on the
magical GPS-directed journey, mak-
ing side-of-the-road pit stops where
various doors await them. Through
each, they step into one of their mem-
ories: a favourite museum, a solo trip
to a lighthouse, a high school musical,
a bad breakup in a cafe.
Each memory allows them to see
these profound experiences and ro-
mantic traumas in a new light; their
journey through these memories is
intended to help them work out their
issues (he’s a picky lover boy, she’s
unfaithful) so they can let their guard
down and fall in love with each other.
The existence of A Big Bold
Beautiful Journey is laudable simply
because we don’t get these kinds
of original, deeply sincere, slightly
corny and unapologetically romantic
movies on the big screen all that of-
ten. Kogonada has taken Reiss’ script
and artfully elevated it with bright
pops of primary colour interwoven
into the storytelling, and theatrically
staged moments, like when David and
Sarah step into a painting on a
darkened set. This layer of artifice
and reference to classical musicals
blends fantasy and cosmic existen-
tialism with the more grounded ele-
ments of the screenplay’s emotional
trajectory.
When Kogonada infuses A Big
Bold Beautiful Journey with these
weirder, more experimental moments
(especially the car rental agency), it’s
interesting, and intriguing, but the
script itself is frustratingly vague.
David and Sarah live in an un-
named city on “the Northside” and
“downtown” respectively. We don’t
know what they do for work, how
they take their coffee, who their
friends are or what fills their day.
The anonymity is intentional but
works against our ability to connect
with the story, which is presented
with a sense of arch-remove in its
studious esthetic. But there’s no life
in this, no relatable flaws or mo-
ments of humour. Our protagonists
are vague avatars placed within a
skeletal story framework that traffics
more in semantics, symbolism and
signifiers than it does specifics.
Mostly, this film is just two very
attractive people parroting truisms
about how hard dating can be to each
other, set against a visually appealing
backdrop. We have no sense of who
these characters are, why they fall in
love with each other (aside from the
obvious physical attraction) or what
they want. At one point, David de-
clares to Sarah that he truly sees her,
which is entirely implausible because
we can’t see either of them clearly.
In their travels throughout their
traumas, Reiss doesn’t effectively
connect their pasts to their present
woes, and not enough time is taken to
set up their dissatisfaction with their
lives before their beautiful journey
commences.
Ergo, what should be a tearjerker
about learning to be open to life’s sur-
prises doesn’t have much more im-
pact than an inspirational Instagram
quote. There are some affecting in-
ner child healing moments here, but
without details and specifics, this is a
big, bold swing, but a beautiful miss.

Artists turn backs
on D4vd after dead
teen found in his car
NEW YORK — Singer Kali Uchis is
hoping to disassociate herself from
R&B artist D4vd following the discov-
ery of a 15-year-old dead girl’s body in
a Tesla registered to him.
The Grammy Award winner an-
nounced Thursday she is removing
their recent collaboration, Crashing,
from platforms after a social media
user called attention to the unfolding
situation regarding the suspicious
death and D4vd’s possible association.
The singer, whose full name is David
Anthony Burke has not been charged
with a crime and is said to be co-oper-
ating with the investigation
“Not my friend, I did a song with
him which is currently in the process
of being taken down given today’s dis-
turbing news,” she wrote in response
to a fan’s Instagram comment.
She responded to another IG user,
who came to her defence, that this is
the reason “why women always get
blamed for the things men do.”
Earlier in the month, the decompos-
ing body of a teenager was found in
an impounded Tesla registered to the
Queens-born artist, days after it was
impounded at a tow yard in Los Ange-
les, according to reports.
On Wednesday, the girl was identi-
fied as 15-year-old Celeste Rivas, who
had been missing for more than a year.
She was reported missing after leav-
ing her family’s home in Lake Elsinore,
Calif., on April 5, 2024. A since-deleted
missing persons flyer posted on Face-
book around the time said she was only
13 years old when she was last seen.
Rivas’ mother told TMZ that her
daughter had a boyfriend named David.
Both D4vd, 20, and the deceased
girl had identical tattoos of the word
“Shhh…” on their right index fingers.
One of his reported leaked songs, titled
Celeste, pays tribute to a love interest
with the same name as Rivas.
Uchis, 31, collaborated with the Ro-
mantic Homicide crooner on Crashing
from his debut album, Withered, which
was released in April. Both music acts
appeared in a music video for the pop
ballad.
The Drunken Babble artist isn’t the
only artist keeping a distance from
D4vd. Amid the investigation, other
music acts including Daniel Caesar,
Ice Spice and Tyler, the Creator report-
edly unfollowed him on social media.
