Please, no THE City of Winnipeg is inviting people of all ages to submit names for 12 heavy machines and a team of pathway plows used to clear snow. Other Canadian cities, including Ed- monton and Kamloops, have held sim- ilar contests. People can make submissions online through Dec. 5 to submit names for six grading machines and six loaders. On- line voting on 30 suggestions chosen by the city will be open from Dec. 8 to Dec. 31. The 12 individual winners will be notified on Jan. 7 and will be invited to an announcement on, or around, Jan. 13. Custom name plates will be print- ed for the winners as keepsakes, the City of Winnipeg said in a news release Thursday. “Winters are long and cold, and can be a bit dull,” public works committee chairwoman Coun. Janice Lukes said in the release. “This is our way of adding a little fun and excitement to these cold months.” The names chosen in Edmonton in- cluded Blizzard of Oz, Buzz Iceclear, Ctrl+Salt+Delete, Darth Blader, Mr. Plow and Snow-Be-Gone Kenobi. The human-powered, walk-behind plows — relatively new to Winnipeg — are used to clear pathways for ped- estrians and cyclists, the city’s website said. “We’re looking for creative class- rooms to submit their best team name for this group of plows,” the release said. The winning class will be invited to a pizza party at city hall with Mayor Scott Gillingham. Individual and classroom entries can be submitted online at wfp.to/namethat- plow. fpcity@freepress.mb.ca MIKE DEAL / FREE PRESS FILES City residents can submit creative name suggestions for snow plow equipment starting Dec. 8. The 12 winners of the naming contest will receive printed custom name plates. City plows ahead with naming contest MAN SOUGHT IN THOMPSON STABBING MOUNTIES are searching for a man after a stabbing in Thompson. RCMP were sent to a home on McGill Place at 8:45 p.m. on Nov. 11, and found an injured 27-year-old man. He was taken to hospital, where he later underwent sur- gery. He is reported to be in stable condition, police said in a news release Thursday. Brayden Charlette, 22, has been charged with aggravated assault, and a warrant has been issued for his arrest. Mounties asked anyone with information about Charlette’s whereabouts to call the Thompson detachment at 204-677-6909 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222- 8477 (TIPS). PROVINCE WARNS OF POSSIBLE MEASLES SITE THE province notified the public Thursday about another location where people might have been exposed to measles. Public health officials asked anyone who was at the Fawn and Cub Market at the Me- ridian Exhibition Centre in Winkler between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday to watch for any symptoms until Dec. 7. They also asked anyone who was there during that time to check their immunization records and ensure they are up to date with measles vaccines. FRANCOPHONE COMMUNITIES GET $9.4M THE Manitoba government has earmarked $9.4 million for eight bilingual municipal- ities to upgrade fire protection and critical infrastructure. Municipal Relations Minister Glen Simard announced Thursday the projects will make the bilingual communities safer. The eight projects, funded through the Manitoba Growth, Renewal and Opportunities program, include: $5 million for the Le Ren- dez-Vous Community, Culture and Recreation Campus in St. Pierre-Jolys; $1.5 million for the renovation of the Rural Municipality of De Sa- laberry recreation facility; $1.37 million for the construction of a fire station in Ile des Chenes; $312,500 to repair the Poirier Bridge in the RM of Taché; $315,000 to upgrade the fire tanker operated by the RM of Piney; and $427,500 to the RM of St. Laurent for a fire truck. On the recreation side, the Town of Ste. Anne will receive $354,438 for the second phase of the Traverse Road active transpor- tation project, while the RM of La Broquerie is in line to receive $120,000 for recreation infrastructure renewal in Marchand Park. The program hands out one-time grants to municipalities outside Winnipeg and is designated for critical infrastructure projects that promote growing and sustainable communities. As much as $42 million will be available under the program in 2025-26. POLICE SEEK MEN WHO ROBBED VLT LOUNGE POLICE are searching for robbers who made off with cash from a VLT lounge last month. The Manitoba First Nations Police Service was sent to a business in Opaskwayak Cree Nation at about 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 12 after men blasted bear spray towards staff and ran away. They were described as Indigenous, about 20 years old, wearing all black clothing and red bandanas around their faces. Police released images from video of the robbers and are asking for the public’s help in identifying the men. They asked anyone with information about the robbery to call the MFNPS Sandy Bay First Nation detachment at 204-843-7705 or the tips line anonymously at 1-833-978-0048.
