NEWS I CITY / PROVINCE
Plowy McPlowface? Please, no
THE City of Winnipeg is inviting people
of all ages to submit names for 12 heavy
machines and a team of pathway plows
used to clear snow.
Other Canadian cities, including Ed-
monton and Kamloops, have held sim-
ilar contests.
People can make submissions online
through Dec. 5 to submit names for six
grading machines and six loaders. On-
line voting on 30 suggestions chosen by
the city will be open from Dec. 8 to Dec.
31.
The 12 individual winners will be
notified on Jan. 7 and will be invited to
an announcement on, or around, Jan.
13. Custom name plates will be print-
ed for the winners as keepsakes, the
City of Winnipeg said in a news release
Thursday.
“Winters are long and cold, and can
be a bit dull,” public works committee
chairwoman Coun. Janice Lukes said in
the release.
“This is our way of adding a little fun
and excitement to these cold months.”
The names chosen in Edmonton in-
cluded Blizzard of Oz, Buzz Iceclear,
Ctrl+Salt+Delete, Darth Blader, Mr.
Plow and Snow-Be-Gone Kenobi.
The human-powered, walk-behind
plows — relatively new to Winnipeg
— are used to clear pathways for ped-
estrians and cyclists, the city’s website
said.
“We’re looking for creative class-
rooms to submit their best team name
for this group of plows,” the release
said.
The winning class will be invited to
a pizza party at city hall with Mayor
Scott Gillingham.
Individual and classroom entries can
be submitted online at wfp.to/namethat-
plow.
